What are digital locks and how do they work?

Digital locks, sometimes called electronic locks, are security devices that require a power source in order to operate. Powered by either electricity or a battery, digital locks provide security for homes, business or commercial premises without needing a physical key to operate the lock.

Using a latch or a bolt that secures into the doorframe in the same way as traditional, mechanical locks, digital locks secure premises and prevent unauthorised access. However, there is one key difference… and this is in how the latch or bolt is controlled. Instead of being controlled by a key  being inserted and turned in the lock (mechanically).

Digital locks work by using either a Radio Frequency Identification device (RFID), Pin code, fingerprint or smartphone to operate them. Digital locks may or may not have a manual handle operation, depending on the type of lock, type of door and level of automation present in the door.
