Choosing the Best Door Locks in Australia
When it comes to choosing a door lock in Australia, there is no one size fits all solution. Selecting the right door lock for your needs will depend on numerous factors, such as the level of security required, the type of door that’s being secured, and the environment the door lock will be used in (internal/external).
Commercial settings usually call for high-security locks that will be placed in metal doors with metal door frames. On the other hand, the lock for a wooden door in your home’s bathroom will require a much simpler lock, one that’s better suited for privacy rather than security.
Mosman Locksmiths are your North Sydney, Northern Beaches, North Shore, and Sydney Metropolitan area experts for door locks to secure your home, business, or other property. Our goal is to help you choose the most effective and appropriate door locks for your needs, and provide the best installation and repair services the industry has to offer.
Types of Door Locks
We’ve created a summary of some of the basic door locks, their basic operation, and where they are best suited. So whether you’re searching for a new lock for the front door of your home, a high-security lock for the office, or a deadbolt for your garden shed, we’ve got you covered.
Deadbolt Locks
Basic deadbolt locks are the most common choice for residential homes, although they come in commercial grades as well. They are extremely versatile, with numerous configurations available.
A single cylinder deadbolt is locked/unlocked with a key from the outside, but can be unlocked with a latch from the inside. A double cylinder deadbolt can only be locked and unlocked with a key from the inside or outside, and should not be used in emergency exits.
Multi-point locks
A multi-point lock is similar to a deadbolt, but it has multiple bolts instead of just one. It bolts the door into the door frame at multiple points, making it a stronger, more secure lock. If the door is forced, the pressure is distributed across three, five, or even seven bolts, making it harder to break into.
Only one lock cylinder, and one turn of the key, activate all the bolts. These door locks are best suited for composite doors, though they can be fitted into wood and metal doors as well.
A great choice for securing the external doors of your home.
Mortice Lock
These locks are embedded right into the door, making them robust, and difficult to force open. They come in many variations, from two, three, five or seven lever mechanisms, depending on the security standard required.
A mortice dead-lock can only be locked/unlocked with a key, from the inside or outside. It does not automatically lock when you close a door.
A mortice sash-lock is a combination of a latch and deadlock. That means it can be locked from the inside or outside with a key, but the door can also be opened from the inside with the door handle or knob.
A mortice night-latch does not need a key to lock, and automatically locks as soon as a door closes. The door can be opened from the inside just by turning the handle, or a key from the outside.
Mortice locks are commonly fitted in wooden external doors.
Barrel Locks
Barrel locks are often called euro-cylinder locks or pin tumblers. They also come in single or double-turn configurations. The single requires a key for activation from both sides of the lock, while a double can be opened from the inside without a key.
They are a popular choice because their simple design makes them easy to replace without removing other door fittings. They are suitable for internal and external doors on both commercial and residential properties.
Door Locks Security Considerations
Some of the things to consider when choosing a door lock are the location of the door, and the material the door and door frame is made of. Exterior doors will require a more robust lock that meets government standards.
Doors are available in wood, uPVC, composite, steel and aluminum. Doors, door frames, and hinges come with different security ratings depending on how they are manufactured and the strength of materials used.
Door locks also come with security ratings dependent on manufacturing standards. Ideally, a door lock should have a similar rating as the door. The security rating indicates how long a door and lock can withstand an attempted forced entry with different tools and forces.
In addition to door lock strength, consideration should also be given to how tamper-proof the lock is from lock picking and manipulation.
